UPDATE: The contest is closed. See the winning name here.
It’s been a while since I did a giveaway, so it must be time to do something fun.
The prize?
We’ll do two $25 gift certificates. The winners can choose from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or iTunes. (I’d add Smashwords in there, but I don’t think they have a gift certificate option?) You can also choose to forgo the $25 and receive paperbacks of Books 1 & 2 in my Emperor’s Edge series.
What do you have to do to enter? Suggest a name for a character.
I’m writing the fourth Emperor’s Edge book, and it looks like one of the core characters, Maldynado, doesn’t have a surname yet. I gave Maldynado a first and middle name (Maldynado Montichelu) in Book 1, but I’m hunting through my notes, and I don’t think I’ve given his family name yet (he was disowned and doesn’t have the right to use it). One of his brothers will appear in Book 4, so it’s time to find out what Maldynado’s last name is.
For those who haven’t read the books, the family is warrior-caste (aristocrats), and those people’s names end in -crest. (i.e. Hollowcrest, Bocrest, Starcrest)
To enter the giveaway contest, simply leave a comment below with a character name suggestion.
Whoever has the name that gets picked (I may appeal to you guys again to help choose between favorites) will win a gift certificate, and then I’ll pick a random participant for a second certificate. (As long as you leave a comment, you’ll be entered for that.)
Let’s let the contest run for a week, so until Saturday the 21st. And, yes, you can submit multiple suggestions.
Okay, have at it, all. Remember, I need a name that ends in -crest!

I froze at Lidencrest/Lydencrest
…but I also kept considering, Undercrest/Yundercrest
Plenty to choose from though.
A humorous one would be Gigolocrest, since that is what Maldynado is. For a serious name, how about Magnoviacrest.
Love the series, can’t wait for the next book – please hurry!
Several of the character names have Latin or Greek origin, so here are some name suggestions for Sir Maldynado Montichelu, from Latin words (according to Google translate) that I think describe him:
Vaecrest (Vae = woe to)
Donecrest (Donec = funny)
Vircrest (vir = man, virili=manly)
Ridencrest (Riden = laughing)
Forticrest (Fortis = brave)
Great contest
Steelcrest
Feathercrest (would explain his hats)
Stallioncrest
Suncrest
Sabrecrest
Stalwartcrest
Calliopecrest or Kalliopecrest
Starcrest
Juliaracrest
Fullcrest
Malanchacrest
I love Tarncrest.
But I’m also fond of Linecrest.
And there is always Falcrest or Falcicrest.
And if you wanted to keep up the alliteration maybe Miracrest, Mourncrest, or Middlecrest.
Ok….a few more….
Hillcrest (the street a lived on as a little kid)
Sumitcrest
Wavecrest
Meriadegcrest (Celtic boys name which means (meaning) great lord)
BTW…love the books and can’t wait for the next one!!
Uzicrest
Kanacrest
Onancrest
All mean power/strength
Ullcrest
wolf power
Hollowcrest (hollow as a synonym for vain)
Anxiously awaiting EE4!!
Um, yeah…I just remembered there is already a Hollowcrest in the story. Duh.
Bobcrest would be funny–a surname I wouldn’t mind forfeiting if I didn’t have a sense of humor. (get it? Huge Christian names and short and simple surname? BOB! AHAHAHAHAHA! … hum.)
Linchkincrest? Maldynado Montichelu Linkincrest? Nope.
Um…
Maldynado Montichelu Adieucrest *grin*
Hmmm… I was gonna suggest Warcrest. I mean, they are warriors after all, right?
But I found out someone beat me to it.
So, what about Swordcrest? Or Minxcrest? Or Pentacrest?
turbocrest
zapcrest
zipcrest
modcrest
Lexcrest
Thanks for a super giveaway!
Hmmm, since the family is a warrior-caste family, how about: Warcrest? or Battlecrest? or even Bloodcrest?
It would depend upon the family’s reputation, of course.
I like the sound of Maldynado Montichelu Battlecrest or Maldynado Montichelu Bloodcrest myself.
Your books sound very interesting. I’ll be checking them out. Thanks and…good luck!
Mercrest (mer is sea in French, so you could name one of his brothers Ryan…)
Vorcrest, in a nod to LBM’s Miles Vorkosigan
Talencrest (I moved my post over to your blog )
Garrodcrest
I guess with Maldynado’s personality and then, I also consider who in their right mind saddles a kid with as many syllables as Maldynado has in his first and second name. I don’t really see his parents compensating for his last name. They wouldn’t have to because he’s a -crest. I imagine them just being extremely ostentatious . So, his last name would have excessive syllables. And although my own sense of taste (hopefully good) would cringe for his first, middle, and last name all starting with the letter M.
So, how about Morrowcrest or Magonedycrest
How about Maldynado Montichelu Marshcrest?
Hi Lindsay,
Mountcrest
Alliteration and the word mount could be interpreted in a number of ways.
I kinda like Mooncrest as well.
Franciscacrest
Macecrest
Glaivecrest
(all medieval weapons)
Maldynado Montichelu Morningcrest
Stonecrest
Glorycrest
Millcrest
Falconcrest.
Maldynado Montichelu Malacrest
Microcrest
Thought of some others but the idea of a mini crest is just silly to me; escpecially in terms of a name for nobility.
Is it dumb I thought more about this after I posted it? Just thinking that as far as Maldynado is concerned –whether he cares for his family name all that much anymore or not — it will probably be significant in some way to Books; be it extraordinary in all seriousness or otherwise. So maybe Bargecrest and then Maldynado would go on to explain it’s importance as to the size of “manly endowment”… Or even the silly Microcrest would work for Books as it would give him something to pester Mal over. And what could somebody possibly to to warrant that given name? Oh blurg.
Sabercrest, Switchcrest
I guess I should explain my choice of names,
Maldynado is a skilled swordsman and a saber is a sword so, yea, Sabercrest. As for Switchcrest, I shortened switchblade and added “crest.”
Maldynado Montichelu … Salvarnacrest?
Awesome contest Lindsay!
Maldynado is many things but to me he’s loyal, enduring, and brave even through all his complaining… so here are a few suggestions that I think might fit
Maldynado Montichelu Durancrest (taken from Durante meaning stubborn or enduring)
Maldynado Montichelu Montecrest (taken from Monte meaning mountain)
Maldynado Montichelu Rendoncrest (taken from de rendon meaning brave/bold/ daring)
Looking forward to the next book!
Here are some suggestions: Markscrest, Louxcrest, Majorcrest, Holdencrest, Moltencrest and Hawkscrest. That’s all I can think of!
Cool contest, hope you find a name that fits Maldynado
Wrencrest
It sounds like “Rehnquist”!
Galaxycrest
It sounds like “Galaxy Quest”!
Bobocrest
It sounds like a monkey!
I hope this is where I leave a comment? I was thinking about the name -
Manorcrest for Maldynado.
Thanks for he contest, it is so nice to feel involved in the making of your new book.
There are so many good ideas already, hopfully you find One you like.
My suggestion is:
Maldynado Montichelu Milecrest
From Latin miles – solider. Used to referr to medieval knights.
A falcon is a bird of prey.
How about Maldynado Montichelu Falconcrest for a warrior-caste family name?
Ohh my goodness what a great diea. Thanks for bringing one of us into your books Lindsay!
Brynncrest
Baroncrest
Silvercrest
Daringcrest
I just skimmed the comments because I am in a rush so if I put a name down that someone else has already suggested I apologize!
I didn’t have one that starts with an M so here are a few more:
Morrencrest
Millercrest
Mithalumcrest
Rhynecrest
Zanecrest
Penchcrest
Tiercelcrest (tiercel means male falcon)
Luxcrest
Magnacrest
My sugggestion for your new book for a surname for Maldynado would be Mannercrest. With the definition of Manner being; a way of doing, being done or happening; mode of action, etc.
For an outlier how about Ludicrest?
Maldynado Montichelu Maincrest just because I like the sound of it.
Can’t wait for the next book!!
Fallcrest
Wallcrest
Vauntcrest
Flamecrest
Embercrest
Spirecrest
Corecrest
And for names keeping with the M theme:
Machiacrest
Machcrest
(Those two come from Machiavelli sticking in my head)
Magcrest
Maelcrest
Murcrest
I agree with Kristina! What a great way for us to feel involved in the development of the next book!
At first I thought of Krascrest, from the Russian word “krasevo” meaning handsome. Plus it does double duty of alluding to the English word “crass,” which I think Maldynado can be at times, even while being charming!
Unfortunately, Krascrest is a bit of a mouthful.
But then I fell in love with Bellcrest from the Italian word for handsome, “bello.” It just seems to have a nice, crisp ring to it. Pun intended, I guess
Have fun choosing! There are some great ones on here!

Okay! When I first read this post I hadn’t read the book yet (on my kindle, just not read yet) but now I have! I was struck by how characters like Maldynado are usually just vain with no depth, while he has a hidden loyal and brave side, and I liked that. So I was trying to come up with some words that meant hidden bravery and looked up these words in Latin.
fidelis, fidele – loyal
occultus – hidden (this sounds too much like occult)
irritus, leviculus, inanis – vain
fortis – brave
admiratio – surprise
questio – seeking
bellus – pretty
From these I came up with:
Fidelbellucrest – pretty bravery (maybe it means that, I’m no Latin expert!)
Admiracrest – surprise
or
Someone already posted something similar but for a different reason.
Bellacrest – Bellator is latin for warrior
Watercrest…
Mavencrest
Firecrest
Goldcrest
Noblecrest
To be more creative…and stay with the “M” theme
Mandocrest; mando meaning to commit, entrust, order, command
Whoop…hit enter too soon…
or Mereocrest; mereo meaning deserve, gain, obtain, serve as a soldier.
or Mactocrest; macto meaning to magnify, glorify, honor/ stay, fight, punish, afflict
or Maiestascrest; maiestas meaning majesty, dignity, greatness
Moncrest
Skycrest
Mapelcrest
Harrowcrest
Finecrest
Love the books – bought all the ones I know of
Greatcrest
or just ‘Crest’ – his family line can be direct descendents of the original king / emperor lines, and all followers/nobles took their name when they swore fealty – many, many generations ago. Since then another family has claimed the empire.
Might drive more plot?
Keep up the good work
