Who’s Doing NaNoWriMo This Year?

I waffled back and forth on whether to sign up for NaNoWriMo (I did it last year and finished the word count but didn’t end up finishing the novel — it was something new and the characters never came together that well), but I decided to go ahead and do it again this year, since it’s time to start the next Flash Gold adventure anyway. I doubt I’ll need 50,000 words to finish it (the last novella was 27,000 words), but who knows? I’ve plotted the first half out, and there is quite a lot going on in this one!

I’ll be traveling most of November, and won’t always have wifi, so I’m sure updates will be sparse, but if anyone wants another writing buddy, you can find me here:

I’ll be happy to “buddy” any of you guys back. Good luck to everyone who’s entering this year!

Yay for NaNoWriMo and good luck! I’m bookworm0753 there. 🙂

  2. I had planned on doing Nanowrimo this year, but family crises have put me three months behind on my publishing schedule. I’ve got three novels in various stages of revision, and two of them were supposed to be out already! One is nearly finished though.

There’s always next year, and I plan a speed writing event as soon as I’m caught up.

    • Lindsay says:

Hope the family stuff turns out okay, David. Revising is a worthy project too! 🙂 (Probably more important than just spewing out words, hah.)

  3. Anke says:

*heh* If you run out of story at 27,000, you could start the NEXT after that, and since they’re connected thematically, you should be within the rules. 😉

  4. Jon Mac says:

I’ve been waffling on this too. I was thinking of just doing it on my own unofficially. But since I’m very impressionable, and you are doing it, I think I will too!

    • Anke says:

Last year I found that participating officially and having a bunch of writing buddies was a major motivation – you can see their wordcounts on the website, so there’s a bit of a competition to catch up to the faster ones, or stay ahead of the people who are a bit behind you. Well, for me it worked like that, anyway. 🙂

    • Lindsay says:

Haha, glad to hear it Jon. No cursing me, though, if you decide it was a bad idea later!

  5. Rabia says:

I no longer need NaNo to get me writing, but I’m working on turning a short story into a novella. Aiming for about 25K words.

    • Lindsay says:

Sounds good, Rabia! (Most of the time when I start “short stories,” they turn into novellas whether I want them too or not!)

  6. I think I’m going to try NaNoWriMo, but to be honest I’m pretty intimidated. I’ve been think about it on and off for a while now and my Public Speaking teacher has pushed me… So I’m at least going to try and see where it goes. 🙂
It’s nice having people in life that believe in you when you really don’t think you can do it!

    • Lindsay says:

It’s definitely a lot of writing and in a month that’s often crazy busy for folks, but it’s fun to have goals to work toward, I think. 🙂

  7. Aly says:

I’m doing Nano! Whee! I love Nano! I am determined that THIS year (my 3rd year) I will WIN. Last year I got up to 33,000 words and previously I tried it in 2008 but I don’t think I knew what I was getting into. This year is MY year! WHEE!

    …I’m excited.

  8. Peter S says:

Just friended you on the NaNo website, Lindsay (I used my full name to register there)!

This will be my first year. I’m also travelling, so I seriously doubt I’ll reach 50K, but if it helps my work ethic, I’ll be very happy!

  9. We’re experiencing some pretty nasty flooding here in Bangkok at the moment. While it’s a massive tragedy, I have to admit the guilty feeling that it will keep me indoors and writing during NaNoWriMo. I’m shooting to finish a 30K-word novella.

    • Lindsay says:

Sounds good, Paul! Or, wait, natural disasters probably aren’t good, but good luck with the novella!

  10. Lena Corazon says:

Ooooh, a sequel to Flash Gold? I am quite excited for this!

I’ll be doing Nano, and everyone thinks I am slightly crazy because I am trying to juggle grad school and many other things… but I have a fantasy novel in my head that needs to get onto paper, and this is an excellent excuse. I managed to make 50k on CampNano in August, and I’ve done lots of planning and plotting, so perhaps I’ll *win*. Either way, I’m looking forward to taking part. 😀

    • Lindsay says:

Yeah, I’d think it’d be a very tough time to do NaNo if you’re going to school as well! Midterms or finals coming up? Good luck!

  11. Tim Meyer says:

I did NanoScriMo earlier this year and realized, I don’t like time limits. LOL

I do far too much revising for continuity as I go and end up getting stuck re-writing earlier scenes to mesh with what I decided to add later.

I may however give 24-Hour Comics Day a swing next year, if I can convince my artist friend.

    • Lindsay says:

The pressure does take some of the fun out of writing, but it does feel good to finish. I think it’d be fun to try comics, but I’d definitely need an artist buddy too. I can’t even do decent stick figures.

I really wanted to participate this year (even downloaded Scrivener to help jump start me) and as you can see I am a week behind just posting this comment! I have a feeling I will end up not participating due to work (new boss and new soldier underlings) and now some family stuff going on.
I will count it a victory if I put just a few words on paper.
